Italian Currency on Your Vacation If you are thinking of having a vacation in Italy, there are some basics that you really should be aware of about their currency. I'm sure travelers have several questions about it, like for example: What is the current conversion rate? Where would I go if ever I want to change my Australian dollars into Euros? Can I use travelers cheques? Are the ATM's always available? If ever I need a sizeable amount of money and I need a bank where would it be? Is my credit card accepted at most places? Is there duty-free shopping? These questions are all relevant and will enter your mind when you travel and have a vacation in Italy. But of course these questions have answers. First and foremost it is very important to understand that Italy's currency is the "European Euro". There is no such thing as "Italian Currency". An Australian dolllar has a value of approximately 0.70 Euro well it also varies in some instances because of the exchange rate. But of course you would want to be up to date on the current exchange rate, and it is a good thing we are in the modern times and you can just go to your computer and and go look for a website about it one website is www.xe.com/ucc/ Next question is where would you exchange your currency for the European Euro when you arrive in Italy? If you arrived at, for example, the main city there is always a currency exchange office located at the airport, exchange offices are not only found in airports in Italy they are also available in the railway stations of the main cities. There is also an alternative you can just use any ATM at most banks which leads us now to answering another question about ATM's and banks these kind of things are found mainly in the Big Cities in Italy, but of course there are some in smaller towns. One thing you should know is Italian's or Italiano's call ATM's "bancomats." The Bancomat works the same way as ATM in other parts of the world, you can also use the feature on the bancomats where you can choose your own language so you can get to operate the ATM more easily when you start. Your credit cards or debit cards can be used to get money but of course you will get euros out of the bancomats. Make sure that the bancomats that you use have a symbol for Cirrus or Bankmate so you can access it. Before you get to go to Italy make sure that you ask your bank or credit providor if the cards you use will be accepted worldwide. Most of the businesses there in Italy accepts credit cards. A good tip is to make sure that the doors on the shop you enter has a sign also the same as the credit card you use. And another thing is Travelers cheques are also acceptable widely in major cities. If ever you are not satisfied on the amount that the bancomats provide for you and you need larger amounts of cash with you there are banks all over italy mostly in the main tourist areas. Thing to know about the banks in Italy is they close for an hour and a half for lunch breaks during weekdays and that they are closed for weekends and public holidays.
