Italian Wine On Your Italian Vacation
By Anthony Coen
While on your Italian vacation you will find that wines are an essential part of this country, Italy has several of the oldest vineyards anywhere in the world and over 20% of the worlds wines are produced in Italy. You will also notice how wine is consumed with every meal and sometimes between meals. Almost everywhere you go you will be offered a wine this is due to the fact that grapes grow all over the country and that wine is made by just about every family in Italy to say nothing about the large commercial wineries. it has been estimated that there are over a million Italian vineyards!. Sounds pretty awesome huh? So the question is where are these wineries found that you must visit during your Italian vacation? During September and October The Enthusiastic Traveler offer winery tours in the Tuscany region. One winery you must see is the "Super Tuscan" which doesn't use the traditional ways of wine making as they blend certain grapes that are not traditionally combined. In Siena there is a beautiful hillside town called Castel Pietraio and at a simple farmhouse you can taste some really marvelous wines made simply by squeezing some grape juice into barrels. Many tourists in this wine area have sait that the air is full of the sweet smell of fine wine. To top off this tour you will visit a Baron making wine in an ancient castle. The unique wines produced here in the castle are the result of the discovery of some very rare grapes. For more information on some excellent winery tours you can contact The Enthusiastic Traveler at their web site www.theenthusiastictraveler.com.. In the north of Italy, not far from Venice is the Ca'Bruzzo Italian Winery where they grow 5 different varieties of grapes and they produce over 20,000 bottles of wine each year. In this small family owned winery they believe that being physically close to the vines make their wines especially tasty. You should try to visit during you vacation and check out this place, why you ask? well not only that you can get to taste their special wines and taste it during the different stages of production but you will also be able to go into their vast wine cellar. The family also allow you to make your own wine and teach you how to take care of you own vineyard. How cool is that?. Bruzzos place a lot of focus on their organically grown grapes and the difference that this makes in the flavor of their wines. So if you develop a taste for this excellent wine while you are on you vacation Bruzzos can deliver cases of wine to your home anywhere in the world. Even once you have returned home orders can be placed through their website at www.cabruzzo.com One wine that I considered to be the most memorable wine that I tasted during my Italian vacation was called "Est! Est! Est!". This semi-sweet white wine that I found in Montefiascone has some effervescence and is mildly fruity in flavor. It has been said that the name of the wine came from a German bishop who had to visit Rome and dispatched someone to mark on the front doors of inns that served the best tasting wines along the road. The Inn doors were marked in chalk with the word "Est!" and when the bishop arrived at Montefiascone he enjoyed the wine immensely and he marked on the door "Est! Est! Est!" |

I wish I had been born a bishop in Germany in medieval times.

It's amazing that a country the size of the state of Arizona produces 20% of the worlds wine. Great research and presentation. Frederick
