By Anthony Coen

One of the main reasons to go on an Italian vacation is the friendly people, Italy has about 60 million people crammed into an area no larger than the size of Arizona in the United States. Italians it has been said are some of the most friendly people in the world. Italians are known for their love for people, food, life, art, family life, music and their great culture covering thousands of years of Italian history which makes it a nice choice for an Italian vacation, Italians are naturally charismatic and charming they also give freely of their affection. People from Italy are always proud of their extensive heritage and are very passionate on everything they do. Italians are the kind of people who are very welcoming when it comes to strangers and quickly offer to share their food and wine, and they even tend to tell jokes or stories. So who are those famous Italian people who may be celebrated at some sites that you will visit on your Italian vacation you may ask?

Leonardo da Vinci is one of them he is known for some of his famous art works like "The Mona Lisa" but he became really recognized all over the world from his work "The Last Supper" which had become quite controversial and have been depicted in the recent book and subsequent movie "The DaVinci Code." He got so well known that his name got tied to several places that you might visit during your Italian vacation. Leonardo da Vinci was born in Florence and spent most of his youth in the Tuscany region before moving to Milan. If you are wanting to see one of his work like the famous "Mona Lisa" sadly you wont be able to see it there but you can get to see one of his other major works which is "The Last Supper" and it can be found in Milan at the Santa Maria delle Grazie a very famous church.

Another well known Italian icon is Galileo who is also from Florence and became famous for his contribution to mathematics, physics, and astronomy. If you are curious about how things started for Galileo a visit to the University of Pisa and the Cathedral of Pisa, which was where Galileo first came across his discovery about his pendulum swinging theories, will give you an insight into his early life. It is said that Galileo timed the pendulum swings with his wrist pulse while he was sitting in the Cathedral of Pisa.

Next we have Marco Polo who was born in Venice and traveled and explored the world. When he died he was buried in Venice at the Church of San Lorenzo and the actual house where Marco was born in Venice still exists and is often frequented by tourists in Italy.

Michaelangelo is also one of the most famous Italians who ever lived and his name will always arise in conversation during your Italian vacation. As a painter and a sculptor he is said to rival Leonardo da Vinci. One of his well known art works was "The Last Judgment" which took him 6 years to complete and is an absolutely huge mural that can be found on a wall in the Sistine Chapel which is located in the Vatican. This important work depicts "The Apocalypse" or "The Second Coming of Christ". He was also was responsible for another major work at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. This incredible dome is something that you must see when visiting Rome on your Italian vacation.
