Seeing Art on Your Italian Vacation
By Anthony Coen
Seeing Art on Your Italian Vacation Italy, home of the great artists like Michael Angelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael it is also the home of the Renaissance. Italy is rightly considered one of the greatest art centres of the world. When you are having your vacation in Italy you will notice that art has very strong ties with their religion and numerous artists and painters were commissioned by the Catholic church to paint murals for their numerous religious public figures. One of the sights to visit is a small town called Vinci in the Tuscan City of Florence. This is the place where Leonardo da Vinci was born and there you can also find a museum that was named after him. The museum has been built in a medieval castle that was called The Conti Guidi Castle. The main objective of this museum is to retain a biographical memory of Leonardo and the places of interest during his lifetime. You can also find a Library where they place almost all of Leonardo da Vinci's pieces and everything written by him or about him. Taking the guided tour of this library is highly recommended because of the wealth of information that the guide will give you during the tour. Another sight to visit is the Uffizi Gallery which is found in Florence, Italy. Here you can find a huge collection of paintings that came from the renaissance period. Lots of painters stayed in Florence for its great landscapes and rolling hills that came to be a major inspiration for some of the artists. A vacation in this country will get you access to this museum and get a glimpse of some of the outstanding pieces of art made by world class Painters who ever lived, some of the art pieces are Michael Angelo's "Doni Tondo" Leonardo da VInci's "The Annunciation" and Raphael's "Madonna of the Goldfinch." not only that you can get to see the masterpieces of these great artists but you can also get to walk on the same streets where they walked. Here is another site to check out if you happen to be in Milan. You can feast your eyes on a church called Santa Maria delle Grazie. In this church are some of the mural paintings that came from Leonardo da Vinci works that includes "The Last Supper". his other famous work of art the "Mona Lisa" is found in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The Santa Maria delle Grazie church is being protected by UNESCO because they say that it is a world heritage site for its unique and remarkable architecture which was designed by Guiniforte Solari in the late 1400's. There was a story that in the heat of World War II one of the bombs that came from the British and American planes hit this important church, all the murals were saved because the complete wall had been covered in sand-bags. One place that you must visit while you are in Naples is the Archeological Museum. You are not going to see any art in the traditional sense but you will simply be blown away by the exhibits in this Museum. It is considered to be one of the top 5 museums in the world and it displays some of the most important artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Do not leave Naples until you have taken a guided tour of this museum.
