Visit Vatican City On Your Italian Vacation
By Anthony Coen
Vatican city is one of the most popular destination in Italy, most people don’t know that the Vatican City is a sovereign city-state meaning the Vatican makes its own laws and elects its own Government and it is totally independent from the Italian Government system. The Vatican is a completely walled state located within Rome and it is the smallest of the Independent States, all over the world, occupying a little over 40 hectares. The history of this religious city is that it was formed around 1929 due to an agreement made between the Kingdom of Italy and the Governors of the Holy See. The Pope is also the Bishop of Rome but he is also the leader of the central governing system of the Catholic church called The Holy See. The Popes residence is within the Vatican City and millions of tourists visit the Vatican each year while on their Italian vacation. Entry to the Vatican City is through the 400 year old Saint Peters Square. The Baroque architecture is truly magnificent and includes many symbols of the Catholic church in a motherly embrace of its people. While you are at the square make sure you go to Saint Peter's Basilica as it is the most famous Catholic site because it is the burial place of Saint Peter, the first Bishop of Rome, who was the founding father of the Catholic Church. This is the largest building in the Vatican and the dome roof can be seen for miles around Rome and over 60,000 people can be accommodated at a church service here. St. Peter's tomb was discovered and announced in 1950's after more than ten years of archeological research. The Catholic tradition states that St. Peter was buried under the altar of the Basilica therefore all the Popes who have passed away since were also buried in the Basilica. The latest Pope that was buried in the Basilica was Pope John Paul ll who died in April 2005. The Basilica is full of statues of Jesus Christ, Saint John the Baptist and 11 of the 12 apostles that are found right at the entrance. You can go inside the Basilica for free but be sure that you are dressed appropriately with no bare shoulder and knees. If you wish to go and attend a mass, the Basilica always has mass every Sunday. There are numerous attractions to see and visit here in Italy during your vacation. You can find the largest Museum anywhere in the world here at the Vatican City. The Museum comprises 1,400 rooms and art galleries that showcase over 3000 years of historical art. The Sistine Chapel is a private chapel that is well known because the Cardinals gather here to elect a new Pope. Colored smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel lets the faithful, gathered in Saint Peters Square, know the results of the voting process. The best way to enjoy this places on you Italian vacation is of course on a guided tour. On a guided tour you wont miss a thing and you will also learn the history and learn something of the places that you visit. Tours can be arranged to suit your requirements but the minimum tour you should consider is the half day tour. The Vatican is huge and just a tour of the Museum could take four or five hours. Organize your guided tour several days ahead so that you can spend your time only visiting the places that take your interest within the Vatican City. In this way you will use your time wisely and you will be able to see everything of interest on your Italian Vacation.
