Visiting Venice on your Italian Vacation
By Anthony Coen
Venice is another wonderful, romantic place for you to visit on your Italian vacation and I am sure some of you are already familiar with this place. Venice is found in the northern part of Italy and is also described as the City of water, the City of Lights and the City of Bridges. If you're a first time visitor to Italy make sure you invest the time to visit this romantic and beautiful place. Everyone who has visited Italy has an almost classic picture of themselves in a "vaporetti" or sitting in a "gondola" with the canal as a backdrop. As mentioned the Vaporetti are motorized buses that are used by the Venetians for their daily transport around the city's canals, on the other hand the gondola is a Venetian boat that is nowadays used most often by tourists and in some cases for weddings or funerals. Venice is composed of 118 small islands which explains why there are so many bridges and why water transportation plays such a large part in the life of the Venicians. In Venice there are 150 canals and 400 bridges on Venice. This romantic setting can set your heart racing as you travel through the canals passing buildings that are hundreds of years old. The art galleries in Venice are exceptional and are an integral part of your Italian vacation. Most travelers welcome a bargain and the best bargain available in Venice is the Venice Card. This card is valid for a week and gives you access to the Casinos and museums as well as free transport on the vaporetti and waterbus services. It also includes transport from the airport by boat. The airport, which has recently been completely renovated, is located on the mainland and you can get to most parts of Venice from the train station. If you hire a car at the airport you will have to use a ferry boat to get to Venice. Parking is a problem in a city based on canals but you will find the least expensive garage is the Tronchetta and you can leave your car there and travel in a public boat. The private water taxis are very expensive and should be avoided if you are on a budget. One way tickets are available for the vaporetti or you can buy all day tickets or 3 day passes depending on the length of your Venice vacation. If you are holidaying in Venice you should take a tour of the city in a gondola, you can choose from several tours that are available. For couples in love you can have a truly unique experience on the Serenade tour. On this tour you will be serenaded by a singer (usually a baritone) accompanied by either a guitarist or sometimes a piano accordion. The tours start on the piers located close to the popular Venice hotels. Most of the tours run for about an hour and you will see landmarks such as the Bridge of Sighs and the Church of Santa Maria Formosa. The Bridge of Sighs got its name because folklore says that prisoners being taken away for confinement would get their final glimpse of the City of Venice from the bridge and sigh as it all passed from view. if your Italian vacation is visiting Venice, and you are with your romantic partner, a gondola trip under the Bridge of Sighs as the sun sets is a very romantic thing to do. Lovers who kiss under the bridge, according to local legend, are guaranteed eternal love. Summer in Venice is peak season and some people do not handle the crowds and the bustling well. Visit during the off season and the weather will still be good but there will be fewer people to contend with. If an off season vacation is not possible the private gondola tours stay away from the crowded areas and are only a little more expensive |
